FORE.DK's review
The course in Løkken was played on the 17th of October 2001 - only a week after a period with really heavy rain. This course has for quite a while had a bad reputation among golf players from the northern part of Jutland and we can honestly not understand why this is the case. Nevertheless this reputation has existed to much regret for the club but now it seems like it is changing. This of course pleases the club and us as well because in our opinion it's not at all deserved in any way that the course is called dull and more less flattering words.

The course is long (5896m/6550y) with some difficult dogleg holes and the wind is often in play. There has been done quite a lot in the club to improve the state of the course, particularly with the matter of drainage and there are other ideas for the future development. There has been build a brand new clubhouse and this project has turned out really well. The building is roomy, cosy and suits the surroundings well with the choice in design and colour.

The facilities for training are quite good in Løkken GC., and they are sensible placed close to the clubhouse and the first tee. The facilities are placed in the right order so that you are first led to the driving range and then the putting and chipping green follows on your way to the first tee. Nice touch. At the driving range you hit the practice balls from the grass; the distance markers are ok and the range is wide enough. Beware of the horses, if you hit a really crooked one!! The putting green is large and with good space between the holes so that you can practice the different types of putts (the short ones and the long ones). The quality of this green is good. It should be mentioned that the Club has a 9 hole (par 29) Pay and Play course where everybody can play with there own clubs or with clubs that can be rented. In the years to come the quality of this course will be raised considerably and it has good potential for becoming as good as a "real" golf course.

It is not traditional to begin a round of golf with a par 3 but in Løkken GC. you start with no less than two!! The first hole is (154m/168 yards) and relatively easy. The wind is the only factor which can stop you from making your par on this hole. The 2nd hole is again a par 3 (164m/179y) and this hole is somewhat more difficult because of a little pond that comes in play from the tee. You still have a decent chance of getting your round going with these reasonable holes, but don't worry you will soon have to face the music.

The 4th hole is a long par 5 (481m/526y) and this hole is rated as the hardest on the course according to the very well made course guide. The drive is tough because of the out of bounds area and the water hazards on the right side. Course management is an important tool on this hole because of the well placed water hazards in lay up distance. Only the real long hitters can dream of reaching the green in two strokes but just forget all about that there are too many risks if you try this. It is more important that you use your head and places the ball in the right spots on this hole. From 100m/110y from the green there are no more than two water hazards and behind the green the ball is out of bounds, so play with your brain - It will pay off. This hole is very exciting and will really test your skills.

The 5th hole is a par 4 (367m/401y) and once again you face a tough drive with out of bounds all the way along the left side. A little stream crosses the fairway aproximately 190m/208y from the tee so what do you do now? Of cause you can play it safe and hit your ball short of the water but then you will have a really long approach shot to the green, a green that is almost surrounded by water!! You are forced to carry the ball on to the green so you need to make a choice. Drive over the stream or not. The safest way to play the hole is to use three shots and then hope to make the putt for par, but remember "who dares wins"!! It is a difficult hole to play and it is also rated as the 5th most difficult on the course.

The 8th hole is a peculiar hole and it can lure you into disaster if you don't play it cool. The hole is a short par 4 (234m/256y) with a water hazard in front of the green and out of bounds on the right and left side. Furthermore there are a number of small water hazards (red and yellow) placed all over the place! If the wind is favourable and the course is reasonably dry it is possible to drive the green or at least to get really close, but be careful. The drive is not a easy as it looks and you can easily get yourself into a lot of trouble. It is a fun hole to play and it can give you everything from eagle to double bogey etc.

The 12th hole is a long par 4 (401m/438y) and the difference between the yellow and the red tee seems unreasonably large. We think that a hole that is rated as the 2nd most difficult hole on the course is almost 100m/110y shorter from the ladies tee which by the way is placed much easier. We only say this because we think that it cheats the ladies from playing this hole to its full potential. In spite of this the hole is brilliant (from the gents point of view) with lots of challenges. The green is well hidden behind water hazards and the trees and it is rather hard to hit.

The 13th hole is a short par 3 (126m/138y) wich is beautifully placed along the edge of the forest and it has got two bunkers for protection against attacking golfers. The hole is rated as the easiest hole on the course and it is also one of the most beautiful. Coming down the last few holes the Løkken GC. is also a little divergent from tradition.

Løkken Golf Course - Tee off - 16th. teeThe 16th and 17th hole are both par fives but that is ok cause they are both really fine holes. The 16th is the shortest (436m/477y) and has the toughest drive. This is due to the fact that the tee is placed in a small "corner" close by the forest and you have to hit your drive through a narrow passage in a row of pine trees and of cause there is also out of bounds on the right side. It mostly has a psychical effect because there really is plenty of space for your ball but we all know that golf is very much a mind game, right! If you "survive" the tee shot the rest of the hole is not very hard to play and you should make your two points.

The 17th hole is a long par 5 (501m/548y) and again you face a difficult drive. This time it is due to the forest that runs along side the hole on the left all the way to the green and a water hazard in driver distance on the right. Furthermore the hole has a quite narrow entrance to the green. This really makes this a tough hole to play. It is in our opinion a very a very nice hole which deserves to be rated as the 4th most difficult hole on the course.

We really enjoyed our round on this course and we think that it's got potential to become even better than it already is. Even though it's flat it certainly is not boring at all and on a windy day it is a real test. We especially loved the greens which are good and holds the ball well even with the long irons. The ball rolls well and true which gives you fair conditions when you putt. In the club house you can by beer, soda and snacks in the vending machines and in the high season the kitchen is open for business. The pro shop is placed in a small house apart from the club house. It has got a nice selection of equipment. We will be back on this course another day that is for sure, but next time we will chose a day where the wind doesn't blow like ....
