| Last year (2000) the following little scene took place in our home club on a beautiful warm Sunday in august. We had planed to play a round of golf at our home course Rold Skov Golfclub, but as it turned out, the course was closed due to a match that we had forgotten was to be played that day. Now we didn't know what to do because we REALLY wanted to play some golf and we had been up early on a Sunday and all. My friend Jan suggested that we went to a place called Sebber Kloster, but at the same time he pointed out, that it was "only" a 9 hole course. That was my thought exactly – do we really want to drive for 40 minutes to play a course with "only" 9 holes? Please notice that "only" is written in quotation marks because of the fact that we really wised up quite a bit after having played those 9 holes. Sebber Kloster is probably one of the best 9 hole courses in Denmark – top 3 without overexaggeration. The course is furthermore established just a few years ago which makes it even more impressive that it is as good as it is.
The facilities for training in Sebber Kloster is quite so and so, but you will find the things needed; drivingrange,
puttinggreen and a small green for chipping. These facilities does not quite match with the course in quality but it also takes quite a lot to do that.
You initiate the round with a quite easy par 4 (312y/285m) where the biggest challenge is out of bounds behind the green. A missed approach shot equals disaster. When we entered the green we quickly discovered that the greenkeepers had forgotten to straighten it out, but that only makes the golf more interesting, don't you think!!
On the 2nd hole - a long par 5 (569y/520m) - the party really begins. Fortunately you have the possibility of playing safe from the tee and hitting your ball forward to the first dogleg approximately 200y/180m from the tee. Hereafter you must play your next shot forward to a landingarea you can not see and you can only hope that you are on the right track and dont hit the lake on the right. If you are a longhitter you can cut the dogleg and hit the ball over an area with heavy rough but the ball needs to carry at least 240y/220m to get on the fairway. The hole doglegs once more but also here you can cut off some length if you've got guts. This is a great hole that really putts your abilities and courage to the test.
The course at Sebber is quite undulated and you really feel that at the 4th hole which is a downhill par 4 (377y/345m). The drive is down, down, downhill and you can really hit a long one if you dare to try!! At the middle of the hole you'll find a bell which needs to be activated when you pass it. This is due to safety because you can not see the lowest part of the fairway from the tee box.
The next big challenge you will meet is the 6th hole which is a par 5 (541y/495m). The hole dogleg's twice and drops steadily downhill all the way to the green. On this hole you can play the secure route along the fairway or you can cut the corners and thereby reducing the hole considerably. This is of cause not without risk but once in a while you have to live a bit dangerous, right!! Even though you cut a few corners you still need to hit three good consecutive shots
to be one the green in regulation. Besides there are many hazardous areas on the way to the green so a par or a bogey is a good score on this super exciting hole.
When you reach the tee box at the 8th hole and look at this hole you cant' help but crack a little smile. Not that the hole is particularly funny in it self but because this hole is (insanely) difficult. The hole is only a short par 3 (137y/125m) but the ball has to carry over a deep ravine and if you don't hit the green with your tee shot all hell breaks loose!! Obviously there is a tricky bunker behind the green that snatches the tee shots that are too flat and/or
too long! So the scores are anything from 2 to 10+ at this hole. It is absolutely a delightful par 3 – enjoy. The final hole is a par 4 (399y/365m) and again it is a downhill hole with a spectacular view and that is something that can lift the spirit of any golfer when you descents to the green that awaits down below.
As we checked our scorecards after playing the 9 holes for the first time we have to say that they were absolutely
s.... Peter scored 9 stableford points, Lars 10 and Jan 14, so we really had something to revenge on the "back 9". Well, it is not at all easy to play a new course without a courseguide (that was our excuse this time). Luckily we scored much better on the 2nd round so it was realy not too bad all in all.
To make it short we have to conclude that the course at Sebber Kloster is quite fantastic. All over the place there is a fabulous view over the surrounding scenic countryside and not at least over the waters by Sebbersund and Nibe Bredning and the course layout in it self is really great. The greens are good and there is actually not one single boring hole on the whole course, but then of cause they "only" have 9 holes!!
There is not at the moment plans of expanding the course at Sebber Kloster Golfclub and to be perfectly honest there is no need for that. Go to Sebber Kloster and play a round or two, you won't regret it. In the clubhouse there is an automate with beverages by self-serving. There is also a small proshop in the clubhouse.
